My paintings explore the depiction of space and examine acts of looking. I layer patterns and surfaces to build up compositions. I want to invite the viewer to consider the status of form and space through my paintings. Breaking down the hierarchy of objects and surfaces allows me to examine the contours and the edges of familiar and misremembered spaces. I use templates, drop shadows, scale and gestural mark-making to challenge the presentation of space within the painting.
The drawing and re-drawing and the painting and re-painting of shapes from observation and memory allow me to rediscover and develop spaces and form within the pictorial space. References accumulate; they range from 1940’s handwriting patterns, to Scandinavian interior design, film, literature and the painting canon itself. I want to leave enough room in the work for there to be an ambiguity of interpretation, where shapes can slip in and out of describing identifiable forms in a similar way to the way that memory operates and plays with the act of recognition. The paintings present a play of shadows and light, suggestion and intimation, exploring paintings’ ability to both represent and question verisimilitude. I want them to speak to us of the familiar and the unfamiliar, the monument and the everyday object.
